How Does it Work

Solar PV Module

Converts sunlight into electricity. The power that can be produced by a solar module depends on its (panel’s) size, the number of solar cells and the light intensity of the Sun.

Charger Controller

It prevents overcharging of batteries and also makes sure that the batteries do not get discharged at night or on cloudy days.

Battery Bank

This component enables the system to be used during no sunlight conditions.

Solar Inverter

It converts the DC to AC power, using transformers, switching and control circuits, which enables our AC appliances to work.

Installation Types

Rooftop & Ground Mounted

This type requires blocks or a frame MS Corrosion free mounting with adequate spacing to prevent mutual shadows.

Raised Installations on Rooftop or Ground

This is one of the most viable solar panel installations, where a raised structure is created, usually upto a height of 6′ and the shade below can be utilized for purposes such as car parking, walkways etc. This type requires MS Corrosion free oil-plated mounting structures.

Vertical Integration

This unique type of installation is basically used in residential and commercial buildings where there is a huge power demand with less rooftops and ground space. Thus, the panels are installed on the outer facade of the building while allowing natural light and heat insulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much of roof area is required to install solar panels? 2018-04-20T09:34:51+00:00

The thumb rule implies 10 sq m of of area (about 107 sq ft) is required to install 1KW solar panels.

However, in existing buildings, often the roof area is already utilized with solar water heaters, recreation areas, water tanks and lift rooms. This makes solar roof tops often difficult in retrofit buildings but installation of solar shed on the roof allows the usages of the roof for solar panels or other purposes.

Can excess units from my solar system be sold to the grid in case of grid tied solar systems? 2018-04-20T09:35:58+00:00

Yes, as per the new net-metering regulations existent in various states consumers may feed the excess electricity they generate back to the grid through automatic export feature of the solar inverters.

Who can achieve short term cost benefits by installing solar system? 2018-04-20T09:37:04+00:00

Those aiming for green building certification and those using diesel as a main source for power generation will get their returns faster as the average cost of power from diesel is Rs 15/- per unit.

How many units can solar system generate in India? 2018-04-20T09:38:51+00:00

India is blessed with good irradiation which is above 1900 KWH/sq mtr/year. Therefore, we easily expect a generation of 4 -5 KW/h (units) per KW per day.

How much sunlight do solar panels need? 2018-04-10T18:49:57+00:00

Sunlight is important for solar, but even cloudy areas are great for solar energy. As long as you have area free of shade, you will get plenty of sun shine for panels.

What happens when it rains, snows, steers or hails? 2018-04-10T18:50:55+00:00

In bad weather, your panel production would not be 100%, but your panels will still be producing power. On a cloudy day, your panels might produce 60% of what they normally would. Only exception is if it snows enough for there to be a significant accumulation on your panels, your panels will not  produce electricity.

How many solar panels do I need to run my home, office or industry? 2018-04-10T18:51:59+00:00

For a home or office with a connection of 15 KW-it is viable to install 15 KW solar system because no one utilizes 100% power all day. Only the main requirements which run continuously can be shifted to solar like the TV, computer, AC, Refrigerator, accessories etc. Therefore, customers with a  power supply of 15 KW from the grid should ideally go for a 5 to 10 KW or solar installation. This rule also applies for industries.

What maintenance is required? 2018-04-10T18:52:50+00:00

India is blessed with good radiation which is above 1900 KWH/per sq. mts/an. Therefore, we easily expect a generation of 4-5 KW/per h’s (units) per KW per day.

What is solar water heater? 2018-04-10T19:17:17+00:00

Solar water heater is a device which provides hot water for bathing, washing, cleaning, etc. Using solar energy. It is generally installed at the terrace or where sunlight is available and heats water during day time which is stored in an insulated storage tank for use when required including mornings.

How does it work? 2018-04-10T19:18:11+00:00

A solar water heater comprises of an array of solar collectors to collect solar energy and insulated tank to store hot water. Both are connected to each other. During the day time, water in solar collectors gets heated which is either pumped or flown automatically on thermosyphon principle to the storage tank. Hot water then stored in the tank can be used for various application.

What are the different types of solar water heaters? 2018-04-20T09:44:56+00:00

Two types of solar water heaters are available; one based on flat plate collectors and the other based on evacuated tube collectors. Flat plate collector (FPC) based system are metallic type and have longer life as compared to evacuated tube collector (ETC)based system because ETCs are made of glass which are fragile in nature.

Both these systems are available with or without heat exchanger. They can also work with and without pump. Systems with pump are known as forced circulation systems.

Which type of solar water heater is suitable for different places / category of users? 2018-04-20T09:47:42+00:00

ETC based system is cheaper than FPC based system. They perform better in colder regions and avoid freezing problem during sub- zero temperature. FPC based systems also perform well with anti-freeze solution at sub-zero temperature but their cost increases. In other region, both perform equally well.

Systems working on thermo syphon principle are simple and relatively inexpensive. They are suitable for domestic and small institutional applications, provided water quality is good and it doesn’t have large chlorine contents. Forced circulation systems are generally preferred in industries or large establishments. At places where water is hard and has large chlorine content, if FPC based system is installed, it must be with heat exchanger as it will avoid scale deposition in copper tubes of solar collectors which can block the flow of water as well as reduce its thermal performance.

Why should I go for a solar water heater? What do I save from it? 2018-04-20T09:58:40+00:00

A 100 litre per day capacity system suitable for 3-4 people can save up to 1500 units of electricity in a year depending on the amount of hot water used. It  can also save around 140 litres of diesel in an establishment using oil fired boiler besides reducing greenhouse gas emission in the atmosphere. Higher capacity systems will save higher amount of electricity/ fuel oil besides reducing higher amount of GHG emissions.

Electricity is expensive and is not available due to power cuts in many areas when required for heating water. Solar water heater, since it stores hot water in an insulated tank, provides water all the time when required. Fuel oil is also expensive and creates pollution. Storing the fuel oil for long term use in commercial establishments is another problem.

What happens on cloudy/rainy day? Do I still get hot water? 2018-04-10T19:24:31+00:00

On cloudy days also, if it is for a day or two , you still get warm water as water gets heated due to diffused radiation available in the atmosphere. The system , however is either connected to an electric geyser in the house or an electrical back- up is provided in the storage tank of the system which is switched on when  water is not sufficiently hot. So, you get hot water all the time even on rainy days.

How do I decide about the size/capacity of the system to be installed? 2018-04-20T10:01:03+00:00

For a house with one bathroom and 3 to 4 members, 100 litre per day capacity system should be sufficient. The capacity of the system increases with increase in number of family members and pipe losses. Generally the capacity is decided based on hot water required  in mornings for bathing. If the usage is in evening & at other times also, the capacity is decided accordingly.
